Exam season is undoubtedly a nerve-racking time for both parents and children. Parents often wonder to what degree they should be involved and how they can best support their child.

Exam season is undoubtedly a nerve-racking time for both parents and children. Parents often wonder to what degree they should be involved and how they can best support their child.

Communicating with parents

Every child will have different approaches to learning that work for them, however, there are things that parents can do to help children get the most out of their revision. As a school these tips can be shared with parents to ultimately help students achieve the grades they deserve.

So, with this in mind, here are our tips on how parents can help their children to revise effectively:

  1. Encourage your child to make a revision timetable – and stick to it.
  2. Make sure your child has a quiet space to work, with no distractions.
  3. Find a style of revision that works for your child.
  4. Be there for support but don’t take over!
  5. Encourage a healthy routine of breaks, exercise and balanced meals.

On the exam day

It's important to remove as much of the stress from the day as you can. Here are some additional tips you can share with parents:

  • The night before - encourage your child to have their bag packed.
  • Get up early - make sure your child gets up in the morning at a sensible time to have a good breakfast and get to the exam on time.
  • Destress - exams are always a stressful experience, but talk to them about ways to destress.
  • Set the tone - many children will take their cues from their parents. If you are calm and in control then this will set the tone for your child.

All these tips can be communicated through various mediums - a newsletter, blog post on a parent portal or via an email. To assist schools we have put together these helpful Student and Parent Exam Revision Guides. Feel free to download these and share with your school community.
